Shebeshxt Faces 11 New Charges: Total Count Rises to 20

South African Lekompo artist Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, widely known as Shebeshxt, faces a massive legal battle. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) added 11 new charges to his existing rap sheet. This update brings the total number of pending charges against the musician to 20.
The state classifies these under Schedule 6 offences, making bail exceptionally difficult to secure.

Breakdown of the New and Existing Charges

The legal woes for the controversial artist have intensified. The combined 20 charges span multiple violent crimes and firearm offenses, including:
  • Attempted murder
  • Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH)
  • Possession of an unlicensed firearm
  • Possession of ammunition
  • Malicious damage to property

Allegations of Document Forgery and Tampering

A critical turning point in the case involves state allegations of witness and document tampering. The prosecution states that Chauke allegedly forged victim documents.
These forged papers were used to fraudulently withdraw previous criminal statements against him. Because of this discovery, the court is now revisiting and reinstating several older cases that were initially dropped.

Court Transitions and Denied Bail

The legal proceedings have moved to a higher jurisdiction to handle the severity of the case:
  • Case Transfer: The matter was officially transferred to the Polokwane Regional Court for trial.
  • Bail Denied: The court denied multiple bail applications.
  • Flight Risk: Magistrates ruled him a flight risk and cited the extreme severity of Schedule 6 offenses.
  • Medical Appeals Dismissed: The defence launched a bail application based on "new facts," highlighting Chauke's health complications. The defence argued he needed specialized care for severe injuries sustained in a past, fatal vehicle accident. The Polokwane Magistrate's Court dismissed the application, ordering him to remain in custody.

What Lies Ahead for the Lekompo Star

Shebeshxt remains incarcerated while awaiting his next major trial appearance at the Polokwane Regional Court. If convicted on the Schedule 6 charges, the artist faces a lengthy prison sentence. The NPA maintains that it has a watertight case, reinforced by the newly uncovered forgery allegations.
