Six Suspects Arrested Minutes After Cash-in-Transit Robbery Near Motherwell
Police have arrested six suspects shortly after a cash-in-transit robbery on the M17 highway near Motherwell, recovering firearms, stolen cash, and equipment believed to have been used during the crime.
According to police reports, a group of armed suspects allegedly ambushed an armoured cash vehicle before fleeing with bags containing cash. However, law enforcement officers launched an immediate operation and quickly tracked down the suspects before they could evade capture.
During the arrests, police recovered five rifles, two pistols, cash bags, gloves, and balaclavas suspected to have been used in the robbery. Authorities described the recovery as a significant breakthrough in the fight against violent organized crime.
Police spokesperson Nomsa Mthethwa commended the officers involved, saying intelligence-led policing and a rapid response by specialized anti-robbery units were key to the successful operation. She noted that the suspects were apprehended within minutes of the robbery, preventing what could have been a lengthy manhunt.
The six suspects are expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrates' Court, where they will face charges including armed robbery, possession of stolen property, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Cash-in-transit robberies remain a major concern across South Africa, with criminal groups often carrying out highly coordinated and heavily armed attacks. Investigators are now examining the recovered firearms and other evidence to determine whether the suspects may be linked to additional robberies in the Eastern Cape and surrounding areas.
Police have urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that community cooperation and intelligence sharing remain critical in combating violent crime. The swift arrests have been praised as an example of effective policing and coordinated law enforcement action against dangerous criminal networks.
