Residents of the Siyabuswa and Dennilton area have been left shaken following a deadly cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery at Moutsiya Mall on Monday, 25 May 2026.
According to reports, heavily armed suspects stormed the shopping centre and targeted cash handlers and security personnel during what witnesses described as a terrifying and chaotic attack. Gunfire erupted inside and around the mall as shoppers and workers scrambled for safety.
Deadly Shooting During The Robbery
Initial reports indicate that at least one security guard lost his life during the robbery. Two other people were reportedly injured after being struck by stray bullets during the exchange of gunfire.
Witnesses say panic spread throughout the mall as customers ran for cover while shots continued ringing out. Some shoppers reportedly hid inside stores while others rushed toward exits in fear.
One victim was allegedly shot inside a fertility clinic located within the mall, while another shooting reportedly occurred near or inside a Pep Store. The full circumstances surrounding the injuries are still being investigated by authorities.
The identities of the victims have not yet been officially released to the public.
Suspects Escape With Cash
After carrying out the attack, the suspects reportedly fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. Authorities immediately launched a manhunt in an effort to trace and arrest those responsible.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident and stated that cases of armed robbery and attempted murder had been opened.
Investigators are expected to review CCTV footage from the shopping centre and surrounding areas as part of efforts to identify the suspects and determine how the robbery was executed.
Community Left In Fear
The shocking incident has left residents in the area deeply traumatised. Moutsiya Mall serves as an important shopping hub for communities in the Siyabuswa and Dennilton region, with stores including Shoprite attracting large numbers of daily shoppers.
Community members expressed concern over the growing number of violent CIT robberies taking place across South Africa, many of which place innocent civilians directly in danger.
Some residents said they feared for their safety while visiting shopping centres, especially after hearing that innocent bystanders were injured during the attack.
Rising Concern Over CIT Violence
Cash-in-transit robberies continue to be among the most dangerous crimes in South Africa due to the use of high-powered firearms and heavily armed gangs. These incidents often happen in busy public spaces, exposing workers, shoppers, and passing motorists to life-threatening danger.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that criminal syndicates involved in CIT heists are highly organised and willing to use extreme violence to escape with cash.
The latest incident at Moutsiya Mall has once again renewed public calls for stronger security measures and faster arrests of those responsible for violent robberies.
Messages Of Condolence
Following news of the tragedy, many social media users shared messages of sympathy and support for the victims and their families.
The death of the security guard has especially touched many people online, with users acknowledging the risks faced daily by security personnel who protect businesses and transport money under dangerous conditions.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, colleagues, and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident. We also wish a speedy recovery to those injured during the robbery.
Police investigations are continuing.
