A tragic fire has claimed the lives of five people, including two children, after sweeping through a three-storey residential building in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, on Saturday.

According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), the fire broke out shortly before midday at a privately owned residential building on Davies Street. Emergency crews responded swiftly, working to evacuate residents and bring the blaze under control.

Despite the efforts of firefighters and rescue teams, three adults and two children were found dead inside the building following an extensive search. Several residents were successfully evacuated as emergency personnel battled the flames.

City of Johannesburg EMS Media Liaison Officer Kagiso Phasha confirmed that the bodies of the deceased will be handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation and the necessary legal processes.

Following the tragedy, EMS has reminded residents to take fire safety seriously by avoiding overloaded electrical outlets, ensuring electrical installations are safe, and keeping open flames, candles, and heating devices away from combustible materials.
