A 29-year-old Malawian national was killed during a violent incident at the Jika Joe informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday, 19 June 2026.

According to reports, the incident occurred following an anti-illegal immigration march organized by the "March and March" group. It is alleged that a group of individuals broke away from the march and entered the informal settlement armed with sticks, where they allegedly targeted foreign nationals living in the area.

The victim, who lived in the settlement with his family, was reportedly attacked and stoned to death during the violence. At least two other people were injured during the incident.

Residents described scenes of panic as community members fled for safety while the violence unfolded. The unrest reportedly left several families fearful and uncertain about their safety.

At the time of reporting, no arrests had been widely reported.

The incident has raised concerns about violence linked to tensions surrounding immigration and the safety of vulnerable communities. Community leaders and government officials have urged residents to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to deal with criminal matters through legal processes.
