A quiet community in the Eastern Cape was left devastated after five members of the Xolwana family were found dead at their homestead in Mfundisweni Administrative Area, Magqagqeni locality, near Flagstaff in the OR Tambo District.
According to police, the tragic incident came to light on the morning of Friday, 10 July 2026, after a concerned friend or relative visited the family home and made the heartbreaking discovery. Authorities were alerted at approximately 08:52, prompting police officers to respond to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers found the bodies of an adult man, his wife, and their three children, all of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A firearm believed to be a pistol was recovered next to the body of the adult male.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said preliminary investigations indicate that the man allegedly shot and killed his wife and three children before he was later found dead. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and police have urged the public to allow investigators to establish all the facts.
The family had reportedly been living and working in the Pretoria and Johannesburg area before travelling to their ancestral home in the Eastern Cape to spend the winter school holidays with relatives. What was meant to be a time of rest and togetherness instead ended in an unimaginable tragedy that has left relatives, friends, neighbours and the wider community mourning.
One of the children has been identified as Buntukazi Xolwana, a Grade 10 learner at Maragon Mooikloof in Pretoria. A memorial service for the family was later held at The Glen Methodist Church, where loved ones gathered to honour their lives and remember the memories they shared.
