Two Victims Burned Alive After VW Polo Burst Into Flames Following Devastating Crash
A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of six people following a devastating collision between two vehicles on the R34 near Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), the fatal crash occurred when two vehicles collided, resulting in one of them, a VW Polo, bursting into flames upon impact.
Two Occupants Trapped Inside Burning Vehicle
The crash turned even more horrific when the VW Polo caught fire immediately after the collision. Authorities believe that two people travelling inside the vehicle became trapped and were unable to escape as the flames rapidly engulfed the car.
The victims reportedly died at the scene.
Provincial Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed the tragic details, saying that RTI officers responded to the scene and found the Polo completely destroyed by fire.
"Sadly, our Road Traffic Inspectorate team has just reported that as a result of the devastating impact, one VW Polo caught fire. It is suspected that the two victims travelling in this Polo were entrapped and perished instantly. This number may change depending on the result of the forensic investigation to be conducted by the South African Police Service," Sibiya said.
Death Toll Stands at Six
Authorities have confirmed that six people lost their lives in the collision. However, officials have cautioned that the final number of fatalities may change once forensic investigators complete their examination of the crash scene.
Emergency services, traffic officers, and members of the South African Police Service responded swiftly to the incident to secure the area and begin investigations.
