Popular Lekompo musician Katlego Lehlogonolo Chauke, widely known as Shebeshxt, is facing additional legal challenges after two more charges were added to the case against him.
The 31-year-old appeared before the Polokwane Regional Court on Friday, 10 July, where the court heard that the state had added charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
The matter was postponed during a pre-trial conference to allow Shebeshxt's legal team enough time to consult with him regarding the newly added charges before the case proceeds.
Although prosecutors did not publicly provide details about the new charges in court, Shebeshxt's lawyer, Advocate Calli Mathabatha, confirmed that they are linked to the tragic road accident that occurred in 2024.
The accident claimed the life of the musician's young daughter, Onthatile, a heartbreaking incident that drew widespread sympathy from fans across South Africa. The crash also left Shebeshxt injured and marked one of the most difficult moments in his personal life.
The addition of the new charges means the legal proceedings have become more complex. Culpable homicide generally relates to the unlawful and negligent causing of another person's death, while reckless and negligent driving concerns allegations that a driver failed to exercise the level of care expected on the road. The court will ultimately determine the facts of the case based on the evidence presented.
The postponement gives both the prosecution and the defence an opportunity to prepare for the next stage of the proceedings. No findings have been made regarding Shebeshxt's guilt or innocence, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty in court.
The case continues to attract significant public attention due to Shebeshxt's popularity in the South African music industry and the tragic circumstances surrounding the 2024 accident.
Further court proceedings are expected once consultations on the newly added charges have been completed.
