KZN Family Tragedy: Three Children Killed in Manguzi, Father Arrested

A KwaZulu-Natal community has been left grieving after three young children were killed in a devastating incident at Lulwane village in Manguzi, northern KZN.

The victims were identified as 15-year-old Kwanele Gumede, nine-year-old Amanda Khumalo and seven-year-old Ayabonga Khumalo. According to reports, the children were killed at their home on the night of 30 January 2026. (SAnews)

The case has deeply affected the local community, with residents struggling to understand how such young children could become victims of extreme violence in the place where they were supposed to be safest.

Three children lose their lives

The three children were reportedly together at the family home when the attack happened. Their mother was away attending to her small business at the time, according to a report carried by Scrolla and republished by AllAfrica.

The children's grandfather, Jobe Khumalo, described the loss as devastating and said the family had been left traumatised by what happened.

The tragedy has raised painful questions about what may have led to the killings and whether there were warning signs that could have prevented the deaths.

Suspect arrested

Police reportedly arrested a suspect after he fled the area and was found hiding.

South African government news agency SAnews reported that KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli called for a thorough and expedited investigation to establish exactly what happened and ensure that the person responsible is held accountable. (SAnews)

The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain the subject of a criminal investigation, and it is important that allegations against the suspect are distinguished from facts that are ultimately established in court.

Community left devastated

The killings have had a profound impact on Lulwane village and the wider Manguzi community.

The provincial government described the deaths as a deeply disturbing tragedy and expressed condolences to the victims' family and community. Premier Ntuli also called on communities to report warning signs involving domestic violence, abuse and severe emotional distress before situations escalate into irreversible tragedies. (SAnews)

The government said psychosocial support and trauma counselling would be made available to the affected family and community.

For the relatives of Kwanele, Amanda and Ayabonga, however, no amount of support can undo the loss of three young lives.

A family and community in mourning

The deaths have once again highlighted concerns about violence within communities and the need for early intervention when families face serious conflict or threats.

Children should be able to feel safest in their homes. The deaths of three children in one incident have therefore left many people asking difficult questions about how communities can better identify danger and protect vulnerable family members.

As the investigation continues, the family is left to mourn three children whose lives were cut short far too soon.

The case remains before the justice system, and further developments are expected as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

May Kwanele Gumede, Amanda Khumalo and Ayabonga Khumalo rest in peace.
