Thembinkosi Lorch Reportedly Turns Down Kaizer Chiefs Interest as Future Becomes Talking Point

Thembinkosi Lorch has once again found himself at the centre of transfer speculation, with reports linking the experienced South African attacker with a possible return to the Premier Soccer League and a move to Kaizer Chiefs.

The story has generated plenty of discussion among football supporters, particularly because Lorch is one of the most recognisable attacking players to have emerged from South African football in recent years.

However, while there has been speculation about interest from Kaizer Chiefs, it is important to separate confirmed information from rumours. There is currently no official confirmation that Lorch has rejected a formal offer from Kaizer Chiefs.

What is confirmed is that Lorch is currently playing his football outside South Africa with Libyan giants Al-Ittihad Tripoli, after completing a move from Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca earlier this year.

Lorch's career has taken an unexpected turn

Lorch's career has taken him through several major South African clubs and, more recently, into North African football.

The attacker spent the majority of his early professional career with Orlando Pirates, where he became one of the club's most popular players. His performances eventually earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns before he embarked on his North African adventure.

He joined Wydad Casablanca and made a significant impression during his time in Morocco. His performances were good enough for the club to make his move permanent.

Lorch subsequently completed another major transfer, joining Al-Ittihad in Libya in January 2026.

Reports at the time put the transfer fee at around $1.5 million, approximately R24 million. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Libyan club.

That contract is an important factor when considering any possible return to South Africa.

Why Kaizer Chiefs would be interested

There is little doubt why a player of Lorch's experience would attract attention from a club such as Kaizer Chiefs.

The Soweto giants have been rebuilding their squad and looking to compete for major honours after several difficult seasons.

Lorch brings experience, versatility and familiarity with the South African game. He can operate in attacking positions and has previously demonstrated his ability to produce important goals and moments in big matches.

For Chiefs supporters, the idea of seeing Lorch wearing the famous gold and black jersey would naturally be an exciting prospect.

But turning that possibility into an actual transfer would be considerably more complicated.

No confirmed rejection of a Chiefs offer

Despite social-media reports suggesting that Lorch has refused an offer from Kaizer Chiefs, there is currently no reliable confirmation that the player has formally rejected a Chiefs proposal.

That distinction is important.

Transfer rumours often begin with a club being interested in a player before negotiations even take place. A report that a club is monitoring a footballer can quickly become a claim that an offer has been made, and eventually a story that the player has rejected that offer.

Until the player, his representatives, Al-Ittihad or Kaizer Chiefs confirms such negotiations, the claim should be treated as speculation.

The latest available reporting instead shows Lorch continuing his career in Libya, where he has reportedly made an impact since arriving at Al-Ittihad. Earlier this year, former teammate Tumisang Orebonye praised Lorch's move to North Africa and pointed to the financial and professional opportunities available to Southern African players in the region.

Why leaving Libya may not be straightforward

One of the biggest obstacles to any potential Chiefs move would be Lorch's existing contract.

The 32-year-old only joined Al-Ittihad in 2026 on a reported two-and-a-half-year agreement.

That means the Libyan club has a strong contractual position and would not necessarily have to release him simply because another club is interested.

A South African club wanting to sign him would potentially have to negotiate with Al-Ittihad and agree on a transfer fee.

There would also be the question of Lorch's personal terms.

Reports surrounding his move to Libya described the contract as lucrative, meaning Chiefs would potentially have to put together a package capable of competing with what the player is currently earning. (Goal)

Lorch has already experienced life outside South Africa

Another reason the Chiefs story is interesting is that Lorch appears to have embraced his international career.

After leaving Mamelodi Sundowns, he moved to Wydad, where he experienced football in Morocco and played in major continental competitions.

His performances included a goal against Juventus during Wydad's 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign, further raising his profile outside South Africa.

He then moved to Al-Ittihad, where he reunited with coach Rhulani Mokwena and other familiar faces from the South African football scene.

Reports from earlier in 2026 indicated that Lorch had already contributed goals and assists for the Libyan club.

Wydad also reportedly wanted him back

Interestingly, Kaizer Chiefs are not the only club that has reportedly been associated with Lorch since his move to Libya.

In August 2026, reports emerged that Wydad Casablanca were interested in bringing the South African attacker back to Morocco.

According to those reports, the Moroccan giants were pushing for a reunion after being impressed by his performances in Libya.

That development demonstrates how highly Lorch continues to be regarded outside South Africa.

Rather than struggling to find a club, he appears to remain a player capable of attracting interest from established teams.

Could Lorch return to the PSL?

A return to the Premier Soccer League cannot be completely ruled out.

South African football has repeatedly seen experienced players return home after spells abroad, particularly when circumstances change or clubs become interested in bringing them back.

But for Lorch, a return would have to make sense financially and professionally.

At this stage, there is no confirmed indication that he is preparing to leave Al-Ittihad for Kaizer Chiefs.

The club's official website has also not announced a Lorch signing or transfer agreement.

Therefore, supporters should be cautious about social-media posts presenting the move as a done deal.

Chiefs supporters will be watching closely

The possibility of Lorch returning to South Africa will undoubtedly continue to attract attention.

For Kaizer Chiefs supporters, signing an experienced attacker of his calibre would represent a major statement.

For Lorch, however, the decision would involve more than simply choosing between two clubs. He would have to consider his current contract, financial package, playing opportunities and his ambitions for the remainder of his career.

His move to Al-Ittihad was a major step in his career, with reports describing the transfer as one of the club's significant acquisitions.

He was officially unveiled wearing the number 11 shirt after completing his move from Wydad.

The truth behind the "rejected Chiefs offer" claim

For now, the headline that Lorch has refused an offer from Kaizer Chiefs should not be treated as confirmed fact.

What can safely be said is that his name continues to generate transfer speculation and that a potential return to the PSL would be a major talking point.

Lorch remains contracted to Al-Ittihad, and there has been no official confirmation that he has rejected a formal Chiefs proposal.

If Chiefs were to make a serious approach, the negotiations could become complicated because of his existing contract and the financial commitment involved.

For now, Lorch's immediate future appears to remain in North Africa.

But football transfers can change quickly.

One official announcement, one agreement between clubs or one decision from the player could completely change the story.

Until then, the reported Kaizer Chiefs interest remains a developing transfer story rather than a confirmed deal or confirmed rejection.

For Amakhosi supporters dreaming of seeing Thembinkosi Lorch back in South Africa, the wait continues.
