A devastating road crash involving two taxis has reportedly claimed the lives of 16 people near Prince Albert in the Western Cape.
According to preliminary information received, the collision involved two minibus taxis travelling along a route connecting the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.
It is understood that one of the taxis was travelling from Cape Town in the direction of Mount Fletcher/Matatiele, while the other taxi was reportedly travelling from the Eastern Cape.
The circumstances surrounding the collision are not yet fully known. Emergency services and authorities are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to establish exactly what happened and what may have contributed to the tragedy.
The reported death toll of 16 people makes this an extremely serious road disaster. There are also reports that emergency personnel responded to the scene, with the full extent of injuries and the identities of those involved still to be confirmed.
The routes between Cape Town and the Eastern Cape are regularly used by long-distance taxis carrying passengers travelling between communities and provinces. A number of these routes pass through long stretches of the Western Cape and Karoo, where road conditions, visibility, fatigue and other factors can make long-distance travel particularly challenging.
At this stage, the exact cause of the crash has not been confirmed, and motorists and members of the public are urged not to circulate unverified information regarding the identities of the victims or the circumstances leading to the collision.
Authorities will need to establish the sequence of events, including the movements of both vehicles immediately before the impact. Investigators may also examine the condition of the vehicles, road conditions, visibility, driver factors and other circumstances as part of the investigation.
The loss of so many lives is a devastating blow to families and communities in both the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. Many of those travelling on long-distance taxis are returning home to their families or travelling to visit loved ones.
💔 Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends and communities affected by this tragic incident.
As soon as verified information becomes available from emergency services, police or transport authorities, further details can be provided.
⚠️ Please note: The reported figure of 16 fatalities and other preliminary details should be treated as unconfirmed until officially released by the relevant authorities.
🕊️ May the souls of those who lost their lives rest in peace.
