Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Levy Mokgothu, 37, has reportedly been arrested in Johannesburg following a dispute over an unpaid bar bill of R84,161.80.
According to reports, Mokgothu was at a Sandton bar with friends on Sunday, August 30, when the group allegedly accumulated the bill. When it was time to pay, Mokgothu reportedly told staff that he did not have enough money to settle the full amount.
The matter was escalated to a supervisor, who contacted the police. Officers arrived at around 4 PM and arrested Mokgothu before taking him to Sandton Police Station.
Gauteng police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that a case of bilking was opened. Mokgothu is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.
Mokgothu joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2014 after playing for Moroka Swallows, although he did not make a competitive first-team appearance for the club.
The allegations are now before the courts, and Mokgothu remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
