πΏπ¦ Mbekezeli Mbokazi is back in training with Chicago Fire! π₯
There is finally some positive news surrounding Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi after the young centre-back returned to training with Chicago Fire following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Mbokazi suffered a thigh tear in training in late July shortly after returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The injury was initially considered serious enough to rule him out for the remainder of the 2026 MLS season, with Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter confirming that the club would have to cope without one of its key defenders.
The 20-year-old had enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign in the United States before the injury. After joining Chicago Fire from Orlando Pirates, Mbokazi quickly established himself as an important part of Berhalter's defence and started all 12 of his MLS appearances before being sidelined.
His performances also earned him a place in South Africa's 2026 World Cup squad. Mbokazi played every minute of Bafana Bafana's four matches at the tournament as South Africa reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time.
He was also selected for the 2026 MLS All-Star team after receiving the highest number of fan votes, but his injury forced him to withdraw from the game.
Now, his return to training provides a major boost for both Chicago Fire and Bafana Bafana. The club shared pictures from training on Friday with the caption:
“Some new and some familiar faces out at training π”
While his return to training does not necessarily mean he is ready to play immediately, it is an encouraging step in his recovery.
For Gregg Berhalter, having Mbokazi back in the group could be a huge boost as Chicago Fire look to strengthen their defence during the final stages of the MLS season.
For Bafana Bafana, his recovery is equally important, with the young defender having quickly become one of the country's most promising centre-backs. πΏπ¦πͺ
Welcome back, Mbekezeli! π₯
