Former President Jacob Zuma Admitted to Pietermaritzburg Hospital

JOHANNESBURG — Former South African president and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party leader Jacob Zuma has been admitted to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg following a routine medical check-up.

Zuma’s hospital admission has attracted attention given his prominent political position and history as one of South Africa’s most influential political figures.

The former president served as South Africa’s president from May 2009 until February 2018. He resigned from office after the African National Congress (ANC) moved to recall him following months of political pressure.

Zuma’s departure from the presidency marked the end of a highly controversial period in South African politics, with his leadership facing significant political and legal challenges.

After leaving the presidency, Zuma remained active in South African politics and continued to have a strong following within parts of the ANC. His relationship with the governing party, however, eventually deteriorated.

In 2023, Zuma became closely associated with the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, which went on to contest elections and emerge as a significant political force, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal.

His involvement with the MK Party followed years of tension between Zuma and the ANC. The former president was eventually expelled from the ANC, bringing his long association with the party to an end.

The circumstances surrounding Zuma’s current hospital admission have not been described as an emergency, with reports indicating that he was admitted after undergoing a routine check-up.

Further information about his condition and expected discharge has not been provided at this stage.

Zuma remains an important figure in South African politics, and news of his hospital admission is likely to generate widespread reaction among his supporters, political opponents and the broader public.
