Woman Hospitalized After Alleged Stabbing Attack by Ex-Boyfriend Near Bree Street Taxi Rank
A 26-year-old woman, identified as Boitumelo Mazibuko, is recovering in hospital after allegedly being attacked and repeatedly stabbed by her 45-year-old ex-boyfriend near the Bree Street Taxi Rank in Johannesburg on 29 September 2026.
According to reports, Mazibuko was allegedly attacked after ending her relationship with the suspect, who works as a taxi driver. Witnesses reportedly said the man stabbed her in the neck and chest before allegedly chasing her and throwing her to the ground again.
As Mazibuko cried for help, an informal trader, Sibusiso Ngcobo, reportedly intervened. He allegedly kicked the attacker in the head, knocking him away from Mazibuko and allowing her to escape further harm. The suspect then reportedly fled the scene.
Mazibuko survived the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment. Her family says she has since experienced a loss of sensation in her left leg. Doctors reportedly believe that one of the stab wounds, near her spine, may have affected a nerve.
The incident has left Mazibuko's family devastated and concerned about the long-term impact of the injuries she sustained.
Her mother has also claimed that the suspect later admitted to attacking her daughter and offered the family R20,000 and an apology. The family reportedly rejected the offer, saying that no amount of money could undo what happened or compensate them for the suffering their daughter has endured.
Police have confirmed that an attempted murder case has been opened. The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on 2 October 2026.
The alleged attack has once again highlighted concerns surrounding gender-based violence in South Africa, particularly violence against women following the breakdown of relationships.
The case also comes amid renewed national attention on the country's fight against gender-based violence, with President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing the nation about the issue just one day before the alleged attack.
As the legal process continues, Mazibuko's family is hoping for justice while she focuses on her recovery.
